Mercato!

First of all, let me just give a shout out to skype! I am so grateful that it exists and I'm able to talk to my friends, family, and yes, even my dogs :) This morning I went to my first class. Sylabus day is not the same here unfortunately. We stayed for the whole class period instead of 5 minutes like I'm used to. I had special events this morning which I think will be really fun. After class me and two roommates headed to the market! We have grocery store by our house that we've been going to but I think that will change for me very soon! Today we went to the mercato. Out side there is clothes, jewelry, leather, vegetables, and fruit. Inside are various meat and cheese counters. I have not been eating a lot of meat and really wanted to get some protein in my body. There was slight panic at the meat counter since I have no idea how to order in Italian! First off everything is weighed in kg here. Second, everything is prosciutto something. So we began to order and the lady had no clue what we were talking about. And we tried to use italian and hand signs with no luck. Thankfully, there was a lady in line who could speak English! She informed us via the meat lady that we could order by the slice just like at home! Then we got bread and veggies and fruit and made our way home. I would like to say that I got 3 sub rolls, 1 yellow pepper, romane lettuce, 4 peaches, about 8 small potatoes, and a kg of rice for 7.76 euro!!! That is less than last nights dinner :) I really enjoyed the market and the produce was so fresh. Next time I may be brave enough to try ordering chicken :)
I made this lovely salad for myself today

Also, we went walking around yesterday and saw this :)

This makes me so happy!

I hope that you have a wonderful day!

I want to cry reading this. Go to the nice man in the corner with the creepy hair and buy cashews & dried kiwi. yum.

I think the whole world besides the US goes by kgs... and I've been here over a year and still can't figure out the conversion from lbs to kgs. pretty salad!

Yeah, the "marchés" here seem to work almost the same way. You'll probably see some weird stuff (like pig's heads or giant crabs), but in general, at least in France, people in Europe seem very against using things like pesticides and genetically modifying produce. I think I'm going to cry when I go back to America and have to eat the fake food we have there. Not to mention how expensive food is in America, which is the most ironic thing since we mass produce it all, therefore, it's supposed to be cheap.

Oh, and I think I may launch some kind of campaign to convert the US to the metric system when I get back, too.
